Consuegra, the La Mancha town known for the windmills on its ridge, has published the programme for the 64th Fiesta de la Rosa del Azafrán, the saffron rose festival. The town hall lists the main days as 23 to 25 October, with earlier events on the weekend of 17 and 18 October.13
The festival marks the short season when the purple saffron crocus flowers and is picked by hand at dawn. The red stigmas are then separated from the petals, a job known as la monda, and dried.2
A crafts fair this year
The town's tourism office has announced a crafts fair that will run alongside the festival. The fiesta is declared of Regional Tourist Interest in Castilla-La Mancha and combines food stalls, folk music and the local traditions around saffron.2
Dates differ slightly between the town hall's agenda and the tourism office, which gives 23 to 26 October for the fair. Visitors planning a trip should check the final programme before travelling.12
